Security, Overview

Dear Readers,

My name is Franz Devantier, creator of this blog.  I am an Oracle Certified Professional (OCP DBA 11g) Security DBA.  I will be sharing with you the basic duties of an Oracle DBA, and also some of the undocumented, and not so well known tasks. 

Security, Overview

There are really three parts to consider when thinking in terms of a security overview.

·         Security Requirements for your enterprise, Threats that you may face with regards to security, and of course conceptually you need to work out where you want to go with regards to security.

·         Security checklists must be compiled for your organization, and reliable industry standard recommendations must be considered

·         Security Policies must be defined and implemented.  Security Tips will make life easier and potentially save a lot of money

The ease of connecting to a database, and querying data from the database tables, must be balanced against your security requirements.  If it is totally secure, then nobody will see anything or be able to do anything with the data.  So we need to balance the security, so that users can alter data, and table structures, but only those users who are authorized to do so.  Of course it is always good to have an Audit Trail, so that you can see what happened after a security breach, so that somebody can be made to take responsibility for the security breach.  Again with auditing you need to strike a balance between using excessive resources, and storing millions of audit records in a short space of time, and storing enough information, so that you can trace what happened afterwards.

You need to create a balance between a secure application, and a secure database.  There are best practices defined for many of these functions.
